Karafuto Ainu (樺太アイヌ, Karafuto Ainu) is the 141st chapter of the Golden Kamuy manga.
Synopsis[]
The bear runs off and Koito approaches the animal that fell from it, thinking it is harmless. However the animal, which turns out to be a wolverine, attacks him, biting his shoulder. Tsukishima kicks the wolverine off of Koito and tries to shoot it, but it quickly scuttles up a tree and attempts to attack the Karafuto Ainu girl next. Cikapasi protects the girl, and the two children are entrusted to Tanigaki while Sugimoto and Tsukishima try to deal with the wolverine. As the wolverine chases after them, the Karafuto Ainu girl’s grandfather appears on his dogsled. They all climb aboard to escape, and the wolverine stops going after them. However, the sled is nonetheless slow because of the additional weight, which Koito attributes to Tanigaki in particular. Sugimoto throws him off the sled.
They arrive at the Ainu village and take shelter at the Ainu girl and her grandfather’s winter house, where Koito starts getting his wounds treated. The girl gives her name as Enonoka, meaning lingonberry. Sugimoto hands Enonoka a picture of Asirpa, and she identifies her as the Hokkaido Ainu girl she met. Enonoka confirms that there were three men accompanying Asirpa, and identifies Kiroranke as one of them from a picture provided by Tanigaki. Enonoka reports that Kiroranke said his group was heading further north. She says that Asirpa seemed very sad, but upon eating some lingonberry offered to her, she cheered up slightly and said, “hinna”. With this information, Sugimoto is reassured that Asirpa really is in Karafuto.
