Meko Oyasi, or Mekooyashi (メコオヤシ, Meko Oyashi) is the 169th chapter of the Golden Kamuy manga.
Synopsis[]
Sugimoto's group stops by a Karafuto Ainu village in Niitoi to ask about Asirpa and the Russian couple's daughter, Svetlana, but the children hasn't seen either of them. Meanwhile, Enonoka tells Cikapasi about a meko oyasi, a monster cat that had shown up near the village. Tsukishima was able to discern Enonoka's description of the monster cat to be a lynx and Koito thinks they may be talking about Hyakunosuke Ogata.
Sugimoto is curious about the connection, to which Tsukishima explains that wildcat is a slang word for "geisha", saying that it is a stupid joke passed around in their division. Koito says that there are plenty of people who hates Ogata, including him as well, and goes on to say that "wildcat" can be used to describe fraud or deceiving people, and that Ogata perfectly fits the term. Cikapasi and Enonoka talks more about the meko oyasi as Koito tells Sugimoto a lesson to shoot a thieving cat if one were to be found.
Elsewhere, Asirpa's group finds a paw print left behind by a lynx, and Asirpa wonders if it is a meko oyasi, saying that her father had told her about them. Kiroranke reminisce that he and Wilk had once hunted a lynx before for money and that its meat had tasted awful. When Asirpa expresses excitement about hearing about her father, Kiroranke offers to tell her more, saying that there is another person who knew Wilk in the past and asks if she wants to meet them. Kiroranke tells Asirpa that the person is being held in Akou Prison in Alexandrovsksakhalinsky.
In Alexandrovsksakhalinsky, a prison guard is lashing a baton at a person's back, causing the person to scream in pain before getting up, asking if he is finished already. Kiroranke explains that the Russian government did not have any proof to condemn the person for a crime, but still held the person in prison secretly. He goes on to say that the person is Sofia Golden Hand, the mastermind behind the assassination of the Russian emperor. Kiroranke tells Asirpa that he is sure that Sofia knows a lot about Wilk that even he does not know of. Meanwhile, Ogata stares at a lynx that had been looking back at him, and he takes his rifle out. However, he is interrupted by Asirpa who asks him to go to Akou. Ogata looks back and sees that the lynx is gone before turning to join the rest of the group.
