The Statue of Kannon (観音像, Kan'non-zō) is the 290th chapter of the Golden Kamuy manga.
Synopsis[]
The Russian revolutionaries launches a surprise attack on the 7th Division as the soldiers attempts to cross the bridge into Fort Goryokaku. However, several revolutionaries emerges from the ground on the other side of the bridge and fires at them, killing Tsurumi’s horse while Koito bears witness to another soldier being slaughtered right in front of him. At the south entrance, the 7th Division tries to fight back against their assailants but are flanked by Hijikata’s Group.
Tsurumi and Tsukishima takes cover behind Tsurumi’s fallen horse as Tsurumi tells his men to ask the ships for another bombardment of the bastions and to hit the area around the entrances. Tsukishima warns Tsurumi that they are too close to the bastions and that Koito will get caught up in the blast, but Tsurumi tells him to believe in Koito as he is suited to be their flag bearer. As per Tsurumi’s order, a 7th Division soldier begins signalling for the bombardment using a pair of flags.
Inside the storagehouse, Asirpa prepares her arrows as she declares that she must protect the Ainu land deed no matter what. Shiraishi looks on at the skirmish in front of them and wonders who among the survivors of the Boshin War with their experience or the survivors of the war with Russia with their momentum will win the battle. On the battlefield, Ushiyama notices the flag signaller off in the distance so he and Hijikata shoots him down, realizing that he is calling for another bombardment.
However, they are too late as the bombardment has begun, killing a couple of revolutionaries behind them. Tsurumi tells Tsukishima to ready every hand grenade that they have on hand and Tsukishima issues the order to the rest of the 7th Division. Koito is momentarily caught up in the blast but recovers in time to see Tsurumi and Tsukishima leading the charge against the revolutionaries. The 7th Division swiftly begins to kill every revolutionaries that they come across but Sofia tells her men to stand their ground as they must not let the 7th Division enter the fort.
Toni suggests to Hijikata that they should retreat back into the trenches but Hijikata declines, saying that if they pull back, the 7th Division will use that as a chance to break through as they are fully prepared to be hit by their own cannons. Ushiyama is concerned that at this rate, they all will be blown into pieces, however Hijikata tells him to have faith in Kadokura’s Group. Meanwhile, Kadokura, Nagakura, Kirawus, and Mansur comes across a statue of Kannon and takes it out to reveal a hole in the stone wall. Kirawus is surprised by what he sees and Nagakura reveals that during the Battle of Hakodate, Hijikata and the other Shinsengumi members hid the Kaitenmaru ship’s main cannon within Mount Hakodate.
