Attack of the Mysterious Winged Terror!, or Attack of the Mysterious Giant Bird (怪奇!謎の巨大鳥, Kaiki! Nazo no kyodai tori) is the 32nd chapter of the Golden Kamuy manga.
Synopsis[]
Asirpa, Saichi Sugimoto and Shiraishi Yoshitake embark on an adventure to catch a sea eagle. They reach a stream and decide to wait in an an (little hut) and set up and ambush. After setting up the bait for the eagle, Asirpa explains the traditional Ainu method of hunting an eagle by using a hook — kapacirap.
Shiraishi notices the eagle in the sky and rushes Sugimoto to shoot it, but Asirpa tells him to stop. She says that the Ainu don't use bows when hunting eagles, instead they use the hook to grab the eagle's leg when they land on the log; it's called hook hunting. She then says that she's started to run low on arrows, so she was hoping to catch an eagle. Huci would say, that in the old days one could catch over 100 eagles in one winter with hook hunting, but once people started using guns, the eagles vanished.
Asirpa then tells Sugimoto and Shiraishi of a legendary giant bird Huri. The legends of Huri exist all over Hokkaido. A single one of its wings is said to be 7 ri (27 km) long. When Huri appears in the sky, the sun is blocked out and women and children are snatched away. Some people say the Huri builds its nest in a cave in Sakkotan.
Shiraishi comments that the legend sounds like a bedtime story, then notices that Asirpa has fallen asleep. He realizes that she only took him with her to use as a personal heat pack.
Early in the morning, while Asirpa and Shiraishi are still asleep, Sugimoto notices an eagle outside their hut. He grabs his gun but then decides to use the hook instead. Sugimoto manages to trap the bird and yells for Asirpa and Shiraishi to wake up and help him. Asirpa quickly snaps the bird's neck and smiles as she seizes her prey. Suddenly, a giant bird appears and picks up Asirpa in the air. Shiraishi and Sugimoto scream in horror and hit the bird, releasing Asirpa from the animal's grip. Asirpa watches the bird fly away, amazed by the legend of the Huri being true. The return to the kotan and Asirpa prepares boiled eagle feet and treats Sugimoto and Shiraishi to this unusual meal.

Trivia[]
- Sea eagle feathers have been prized as the highest class of arrow feather since the time of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. They were a valuable trading commodity between the Ainu and the Japanese.
- The hook hunting can be used for cranes or hawks, too. The hooks differ in sizes depending on the size of bird.
- The giant bird that tried to snatch Asirpa away could be a vulture. During the waning years of the Meiji Era, a giant bird attacked a carriage in a field in the Kushiro region. The local farmers ended up beating it to death with sticks. It was thought to be a vagrant vulture that flew over from the Asian mainland. To this day, the stuffed vulture is supposedly kept in the science room of a high school in Kushiro.
