Overview

Fina (フィーナ, Фина) was the wife of Kouichi Hasegawa and the mother of Olga.

Appearance[]

Fina was a Russian woman with light eyes, blonde eyelashes, and blonde hair that she kept tied up in a bun. She wore a flower-printed dress over a long sleeved button up shirt and straw shoes (lapti).

While outside, Fina wore a dark jacket over her dress, leather boots, and a piece of cloth tied over her head. She also carried a large bag which she slung over her shoulder and a handbag.

Personality[]

Fina was a kind and compassionate woman who cared deeply about her family. Upon suspecting her husband might be in danger, she immediately returned to Hasegawa's store to check on him.

She was also quite intuitive, realizing that Zoya isn't interested in learning Japanese. As told by Tsurumi, Fina was also perceptive enough to figure out her husband's real identity. However, she believed in his love for her and never disclosed the truth to the Russia's police.

Background[]

Fina was likely born and raised in Vladivostok, where she later met her husband Hasegawa Kouichi, a Japanese photographer who initially came to Russia as a teenager to help with his father's work and then inherited a photo studio. Together they had a daughter Olga.

One day, as Fina held Olga in her arms, Hasegawa returned from a photography session and greeted both of them, asking if Olga had been good. Fina then notified her husband that he had customers waiting for him. The customers were two men and a woman that wanted Hasegawa to teach them Japanese.

Hasegawa would report their progress to Fina. As he was taking a photo of his wife, Hasegawa noted Zoya is just not cut out for learning Japanese. Fina said that even a Japanese beggar could speak Japanese well and stated that it was not a question of how smart Zoya was, but rather that she was simply not interested. Zoya would turn out to be more fascinated with their daughter as Fina would let her cradle Olga.

Months later, one day Hasegawa came to Fina and told her to return to her family home. He asked her to not come back until he joined her and Olga. Heeding his warning, Fina took Olga and went back to her family home. On her way there, she passed by a group of Okhrana officers heading to Hasegawa's store. She then found a wanted poster of one of their guests, Wilk, lying on the ground. Fina turned back to the store, concerned about her husband.

Ultimately, Fina and Olga were caught up in a gunfight between the guests, who turned out to be Russian revolutionaries, and the Okhrana officers. They were eventually found by Sofia, who suspected she was the one who killed both Fina and Olga with a single bullet. However, it was Wilk's bullet that killed the mother and daughter.[1]

After Hasegawa was left alone with Fina and Olga, Fina called out her husband's name and reached out to touch his face. Hasegawa grabbed her hand and confessed to her that his name was not Kouichi Hasegawa. When she asked who he was, Hasegawa took off his glasses and revealed his true name to be Tokushirou Tsurumi. According to Tsurumi, he wanted Fina to know his real name as he believed she would understand him.[1] With her dying breath, Fina watched Tsurumi take Olga in his arms, embracing her one last time before putting them to rest at their store and burning it down, cremating them both.

Legacy[]

The deaths of Fina and Olga greatly affected Tsurumi and influenced his current mindset as well as his disdain towards the Japanese government and his hatred for Wilk. Despite many years passing, he still carries the little finger bones of his late wife and daughter as a memento. Tsurumi's goals are partially driven by his desire to make the soil in which his wife and daughter sleep a part of Japan.

Believing she was a murderer, Sofia Golden Hand has blamed herself for Fina and Olga's deaths all her life. Her guilt prevented her from joining Wilk and Kiroranke in Hokkaido; instead, Sofia became the leader of Russian revolutionaries.

Trivia[]

  • The name Fina is not a typical Russian name. It is likely to be of foreign origin, a nickname, or a short form of her full name, like Rufina or Serafima.
