Koujirou Hanazawa (花沢 幸次郎, Hanazawa Kōjirō ) was the former Lieutenant General of the 7th Division and the father of Hyakunosuke Ogata and Yuusaku Hanazawa.
Appearances[]
Hanazawa was a middle-aged man with dark hair that was swept to the side, crow's feet, and a light mutton chop mustache. His eyes and eyebrows were inherited by his eldest son, Ogata.
Hanazawa wore a military uniform adorned with a military sash and many decorations pinned on it.
Personality[]
Hanazawa believed that the duty of being a flag bearer was so important that he had told his son Yuusaku, who was chosen to be one, not to kill anyone so that he could become an icon that encourages the men. He also believed that the act of killing people is something that fills everyone with feelings of guilt, which he also passed onto his son.
Background[]
Koujirou Hanazawa was born in Satsuma. He came from a prestigious family of skilled military men as his father was in the army as well. Sometime during his life, he fathered a boy with a mistress.
Hanazawa went on to have another son, Yuusaku, with his legal wife and as a result, left his mistress and her son behind. When Yuusaku became the flag bearer for the Japanese Imperial Army, Hanazawa told his son that he alone must not kill anybody in order to uphold the sacred duty of such an important role.
He became the leader of the 7th Division and was the Chief of Staff for the siege of Port Arthur in which 203 Hill was successfully taken. He commanded the operation for the sake of furthering his own career, however, more than half of the 10,000 7th Division soldiers were killed. He was harshly criticized for these actions. After returning home from the Russo-Japanese War, he was murdered by his son Ogata, who, alongside Tsurumi, set up Hanazawa's death to make it look like he committed seppuku out of remorse.
Legacy[]
After his death, the Japanese government blamed his subordinates for causing him to kill himself and deemed the 7th Division unworthy of receiving any medals or monetary rewards. The 7th Division also became treated like outcasts from the rest of the Japanese army.
Trivia[]
- In 2018 Golden Kamuy All-Stars popularity poll, Koujirou Hanazawa ranked 67th, gaining 311 votes.[1]
